Spyderco Endura 4 Review

Spyderco

Spyderco has been around for nearly four decades. The brand is definitely one of the top in the industry.

They have been credited with creating a couple of key features now considered staples in the pocket knife industry—the pocket clip and the availability of a serrated edge.

They created their popular opening hole in the blade, which revolutionized the opening of folders.

This esteemed company headquartered in Golden, Colorado, backs all of their knives with a solid warranty. If anything goes wrong with your knife, simply send it back to them to be fixed.

Blade

All of the knife blades are around 3.75 inches long. They are available in either plain edge, fully serrated edge, or combination edge.

The entry level knife has a blade that is made from VG-10.

For a budget friendly knife, VG-10 is well respected throughout the industry. Spyderco uses it on many of their knives, since it functions admirably.

This blade resists corrosion, holds an edge well, and sharpens easily. The VG-10 blades are available in either silver or black.

The next level of the knife has a blade that is made of ZDP-189. ZDP-189 is slightly harder than VG-10.

It's a little more difficult to sharpen but holds its edge longer than the VG-10 blade. This knife is a little more expensive.

However, if you have a more rigorous use for your knife, it will be worth the added cost. The last knife has a unique steel. Spyderco calls these knives the Damascus line.

The steel is called DPS 15, which is uniquely crafted Japanese steel made by wrapping layers of VG-10 in Damascus steel.

The blade is etched with a pattern resulting in a unique look. This knife is quite expensive, but the blade is made from high-quality steel.

Mechanism

To open the blade, all of the knives feature Spyderco’s patented opening hole. One version of the knife also has an Emerson opener. You can find it here.

The Emerson opener catches on your pocket when you draw the knife. This results in an easy to open knife.

The other knives are almost as easy to open by utilizing Spyderco’s opening hole.

The opening hole is larger than other knife opening mechanisms making it easier to open with one hand.

The blade locks in place by a back lock.

The back lock is sturdy and allows for plenty of cutting strength.

In addition, the blade closes easily with either hand. The back lock mechanism uses a larger rocker arm built into the handle. It pivots at the center of the handle.

When pressed down, it allows the blade to be opened. Then, the end of the rocker arm engages the tang of the blade and allows it to lock in place firmly.

Handle

Most of the handles of these knives are made from fiberglass reinforced nylon.

As the name implies, the handles have all of the features of nylon with the added strength of the fiberglass.

These handles also feature Bi-Directional Texturing to allow for a very firm grip.

The ergonomic shape, coupled with the jimping along the spine, increases the grip strength of this handle.

The choil allows for safe use, as your hand is unlikely to slip towards the blade.

The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle is available in black, purple, foliage green, and red for the trainer knife.

The version of the knife with the ZDP-189 blade has a specific green color associated with it as part of Spyderco’s British Racing line of knives.

One version of the knife is available with a stainless steel blade. Dependent on your use for the knife, this could be a cool feature for you.

If you are able to sacrifice grip strength, the stainless steel handle looks sleek and adds some additional weight and cutting strength.

The Damascus version of the knife has a titanium handle to match its elaborate blade.

This only adds to the unique look of the knife.

The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle knives weigh in at 3.6 ounces and have a four-position pocket clip.

This allows for tip up or tip down carry for both left-handed and right-handed users.

They make for great everyday carry knives. The stainless steel handle weighs in at 5.7 ounces, which is a testament to its added strength. The Damascus weighs in at 4.2 ounces.

Summary

Overall, the Endura4 knives are excellent for everyday carry. Multiple options allow you to select a knife that meets your needs.

The blade has multiple steels available and a variety of edge styles. All of the knives have Spyderco’s opening hole.

One of them also has an Emerson opener that opens the knife by using your pocket.

There are also multiple handle options available.

Fiberglass reinforced nylon will be the lightest, while stainless steel adds cutting strength.

The Damascus knife is quite pricey but is a high quality and sleek looking knife.

As this knife is on its fourth generation, it has obviously been very popular. It will exceed your expectations as an everyday carry knife.

However, the knife is reasonably priced depending on which options you select. All in all, you will not be disappointed, no matter what use you may have for it.

If you are on the fence for this knife, most people struggle deciding between the spyderco endura vs delica. The Delica 4 is smaller with a blade that is around 1 inch less and it weighs around 1 ounce less.
